Charlie Douglass and Hayley Davis

both win two titles in Spain

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
(Better late than never! The Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort Internet service crashed for a second time on Tuesday and was still not back on line by the time I departed near lunchtime today!)
Charlie Douglass, the left-handed Brocket Hall scratch player, and 16-year-old Hayley Davis, who plays off one at Ferndown, won the Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open and Under-16 girls’ titles respectively as the curtain rang down on the 2nd Hacienda del Alamo Women’s Winter Golf Festival on a day of glorious Spanish sunshine at the five-star Murcia resort.
It was a case of golfing déjŕ vu. Charlie and Hayley also captured the Murcia Ladies Open and Under-16 championships when the Festival teed off last Thursday and Friday.
Charlie won the ladies’ championship trophy and a 400 Euros voucher by a single shot in a tight finish with English girl international Holly Clyburn, a +1 player at Woodhall Spa, and Charlotte Dalton (Ladbrook Park).
Douglass scored 73 and 75 for a four-over-par total of 148 over the long and so testing Dave Thomas-designed course which has several par-4s where the majority of lady competitors cannot get home in two shots.
“Much as I would like to come back to next year’s Festival, because I think it is a great idea, I hope to go to the Ladies European Tour School, turn pro and be playing golf for a living in 2010,” said Miss Douglass
Clyburn had rounds of 76 and 73 for 149, the same score as Dalton who scored 75 and 74 and lost out for the second-placed 200 Euros voucher having the poorer second round.
It was worth more for Dalton to win the top handicap prize of 200 Euros with a net total of 145 off two of a handicap so third scratch voucher prize worth 100 Euros wsent to Ellis Keenan (Sunningdale) with scores of 79 and 81 for 160.
Davis won her latest Under-16 girls title by seven strokes with rounds of 70 and 72 for 142, excellent scoring by a teenager who will be knocking on the door of not only an under-18 England cirls cap this year but also full international honours if her Spanish form is a foretaste of things to come back home in 2009.
“I’ve worked hard with my coach, Scott Godfrey, during the winter and it is paying off already.I hit the fairways and most of the greens in regulation and once I got the hang of the very fast Bermuda grass putting surfaces, I began to hole a few putts,” said Hayley.
Runner-up was Welsh international Amy Boulden from Llandudno Maesdu with scores of 75 and 74 for 152, three shots ahead of Hannah Turland (Tidworth) who partnered Hayley Davis to victory in Sunday’s Costa Calida Foursomes over the same course.
Thirteen-year-old Amber Ratcliffe (Royal Cromer), who has slashed 10 shots off her handicap since she played at the inaugural Festival last February, won the top Under-16 handicap award of 100 vouchers with a net total of 142 off seven.
The seniors’ title and trophy went to Royal Guernsey player Di Hudson with scores of 90 and 87 for 177.
PS There will be another Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival next February, hopefully more in sync with the mid-term school holidays in Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales! Watch this space

2nd Hacienda del Alamo Womens Winter Festival

HAYLEY DAVIS IS

REIGNING IN SPAIN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The Hayley Davis bandwagon rolled on again on the fifth day of the Hacienda del Alamo Women’s Winter Golf Festival at the five-star Murcia golf resort in Spain today.
The 16-year-old Ferndown player, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who won the Murcia Under-16 girls’ open title last Friday and the Costa Calida Foursomes in tandem with another14-year-old, Hannah Turland (Tidworth) on Sunday, equalled the ladies’ course record of two-under-par 70 in the first round of the Festival’s final 36-hole event.
Because preferred lies were in operation to protect the dormant Bermuda grass, Hayley’s effort will not rank alongside the record-setting 70 by former Curtis Cup player Elaine Farquharson-Black, achieved in 2007 over the long and testing Dave Thomas-designed course.
But that does not detract from another splendid day’s golf by young Davis who in golfing terms is “playing out of her skin” under the Spanish sun on the Costa Calida.
Over a course of some 5,534 metres – more than 6,000yd – one-handicapper Hayley birdied the two long holes on the outward journey, the fourth and ninth, dropping only one shot, at the seventh, to turn in one-under 35.
Eight pars and a birdie at the par-4 16th saw her home also in one-under 35.
In the Murcia Under-16s’ open championship, she has opened up a five-stroke lead over Welsh international Amy Boulden (Llandudmo Maesdu) who had an unwanted hat-trick of bogey 5s from the first to the third before birdieing the long fourth in halves of 38 and 37.
Thirteen-year-old Royal Cromer prospect, Amber Ratcliffe, is lying joint third at halfway in the Under-16s’ championship with Hannah Turland (Tidworth) on the 79 mark.
Charlie Douglass, the Brocket Hall scratch player, winner of the Murcia Ladies Open over two rounds on Firday, again leads the women’s section with a tidy round of one-over-par 73.
Charlie birdied the fourth, fifth, ninth, and 16th in halves of 35 and 38 but she spoiled her card with a double bogey 7 at the long 14th and single shots dropped at the seventh, eighth and 11th.
Her nearest rivals are Charlotte Dalton (Ladbrook Park) on 75 and teenager Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) on 76.

Campbell Thomson, Cara Gruber, director of golf Billy Sim, Hannah Turland and Hayley Davis after the Hacienda del Alamo Festival Costa Calida Foursomes today

Hayley and Hannah win Costa Calida Foursomes

title at Hacienda del Alamo Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Two England girl golf stars of the future, Hayley Davis from Ferndown and Hannah Turland of Tidworth, underlined their international promise with an excellent round of three-over-par 75 to win the Hacienda del Alamo Women´s Winter Festival Costa Calida Foursomes title on an unusually damp and cloudy day at the five-star resort in the Murcia region of Spain today.
Only 14 years old, and playing the alternate shot game together for the first time, they matched the outward par of 36 over the long and testing Dave Thomas-designed course with a birdie at the long fourth and a bogey at the sixth and the rest pars.
Davis, who plays off one, and two-handicapper Turland did get a second birdie at the par-4 12th but the cold began to get to them and they bogeyed four of the last six holes. But it was a splendid effort which saw them collect 200 Euros each in vouchers.
They finished three shots ahead of the pair who travelled the farthest to get to Spain - Cara Gruber from Royal Dornoch and her boyfriend Campbell Thomson from Strathpeffer Spa, both venues being north of Inverness. One-handicapper Cara and Campbell, who plays off 16, did not make many serious mistakes, which is the secret of foursomes golf. A scratch score of 78 gave them a net score - half their combined handicaps - of 69.5 which also earned them vouchers to the value of 200 Euros each.
The Clyburn sisters from Woodhall Spa, 18-year-old England girl international Holly and her 12-year-old sibling India, topped the scratch scores in the Female & Female category - Hayley Davis and Hannah Turland were debarred from winning two prizes - with an round of 81. They each won a presentation box from Glenmuir, one of the major sponsors of the Festival.
Top scratch score in the Male & Female category was an 85 produced by the Royal Cromer partnership of 13 year old Amber Ratcliffe and her 16 year old brother Ryan. Amber also won a Glenmuir presentation box while Ryan gained a voucher worth 100 Euros.

Festival St Valentine's Day event will

now be an "Ambrose Scramble"

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Festival Organiser
Good news for Hacienda del Alamo Festival competitors who are playing in the St Valentine's Day team event on Saturday, February 14. They will have to pay only 15 Euros of an entry fee each.
Because we have not received enough entries from lady professionals, we have had to scap the original concept of a pro-am.
Now we have homed in on the idea of a Scramble with teams of three or four amateurs. On the advice of Ladies Golf Union Head of Golf Operations, Susan Simpson, we will probably use the "Ambrose Scramble" format for producing net scores.
For teams of three players, all their handicaps are added together and divided by six. That gives you a figure which is deducted from the team's gross total.
For teams of four players, the aggregate of their handicaps is divided by eight before being deducted from the gross total.
There will be prizes for scratch and handicap totals.
Don't worry if you have never played in a Scramble before. We will give every player a sheet of the "Rules" but basically, everybody drives off, you select your best tee shot and then everybody plays a shot from within a specified distance of that ball ... and that is repeated until the best ball is holed out.

Billy Sim, the Hacienda del Alamo Director of Golf, says:
"We run a lot of Scrambles out here and, without fail, they are a lot of fun. This one will be no exception."
The really good news is that because we have been unable to put on the pro-am we promised, we are reducing the entry fee for all Festival competitors in the Saturday Scramble to a flat 15 Euros each.

Pamela and Brian pull out of Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Festival Organiser
News from the Spanish-based couple, Pamela Morgan and Brian Harrold, that they won't be coming to the Hacienda del Alamo February Festival after all.
Here is Pamela's message:
"I got acknowledgement that I got into the Spanish seniors championship which is February 11th to 13th and is in Cadiz, so it is not possible to get to Murcia in time for the Festival.
"Sorry for letting you down but I only heard from Spanish Federation this week.
"Brian is my caddie, so he won't make it either
Good luck with the Festival."
Pamela Morgan
Brian Harrold

(both La Cala members)

Good luck to Pamela and Brian at the Spanish seniors championship. I just hope the day will come when the Hacienda del Alamo February Festival gets so important a date on the golf calendar that players will pull out of the SPANISH championship to play in the Festival!
We can take late entries for any of the six events (two for Under-16 girls) at the Festival (February 12-17).
Just E-mail Colin@scottishgolfview.com if you are reading this and feeling that, yes, you would like to spend a few days golfing in the Spanish sun in the friendly Festival atmosphere at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort.

Putting guru Harold Swash (left) with Glenn Billington and his Certificate of Excellence.

Top-class putting coach Glenn

Billington joins Academy staff

at Hacienda del Alamo

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
HDA Festival Organiser
Competitors at next month's Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival have a golden opportunity to come home much better putters than they were when left the country!
The reason is that putting expert Glenn Billington has joined the five-star Murcia golf resort's teaching staff at the range and practice facilities which are second to none in Spain.
Who is Glenn Billington? Well he comes from the same area in Birmingham as Harold Swash, which is a good start as it means they talk the same language in more ways than one.
Who's Harold Swash? He's arguably the best known "Putting Doctor" in European/world golf.
Harold has given Padraig Harrington putting tips and many more European Tour players as well.
And Glenn Billington gained "Accredited Instructor" qualifications by attending the Harold Swash Putting School.
Glenn is also a member of the Professional Golfers Association and a Master Teaching Professional with the World Golf Teachers' Federation.
Pretty impressive, eh?
So, during the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Golf Festival, Glenn, who recently moved his Spanish base from La Manga to Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort, will be available at the practice range to help anyone who wants to become a better putter ... and who doesn't?
Here are some quotes from Glenn:
"I have enjoyed every minute since I moved to Spain. Now I have a state of the art putting studio within the Academy at the fantastic Golf Resort of Hacienda Del Alamo. Everything about the resort is sheer class and hopefully I will add that little extra,
"I offer excellent putting coaching with long term effects in my studio. I also have access to the two putting greens and can extend that to playing lessons on the magnificent par 72 Championship Golf Course. There is nowhere better to learn than on the course, but get the basics right first.
"All lessons are videoed with expert analysis which for the player who seeks absolute perfection there is nothing better.
"With a little more knowledge we can change people's golfing lives for the good, giving them direction from within which is long term. With the correct type of coaching people can switch from an individual who lacks confidence to someone who believes in themselves.
"I have the technique and ability to help long term through technical and mind management.
"I have to say a big thank you to Harold and Phil Kenyon. The experience so far has been beyond belief. To work with them both at professional events and to know that you are working with and learning from the best in the business is a dream come true.
"I will always be professional and guarantee to improve everyone who trusts my coaching. My attitude is positive and friendly and the atmosphere within my studio is electrifying.
"Having played golf to a good standard I decided that coaching was a way of working with people and getting the best out of them in golf. It is fantastic to see how all students improve when they are led the ‘Harold Swash’ way.
"So many of my students have already succeeded by improving their putting – it is so satisfying to hear their positive approach to putting and how their game continues to improve. Combining these techniques and the Yes! C Groove putters – all will succeed.
"All standards of player - from amateur to professional - will improve. I look forward to meeting you, soon at the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival.

ST VALENTINE'S NIGHT DINNER AT HACIENDA
DEL ALAMO GOLF RESORT
There will be a St Valentine's Night dinner in the Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort restaurant within the clubhouse on February 14.
It is being organised by the villa owners but competitors at the Hacienda del Alamo Winter Festival are welcome to attend.
The price is 35 Euros per head, which includes wine and other drinks at the table.
There have been 60 reservations already.

ST VALENTINE'S DAY TEAMS OF THREE SUBSTITUTE
The lack of lady professional entries has forced us to make the St Valentine's Day competition at the Festival a teams-of-three amateur event with prizes for the best scratch and best net team totals.

COSTA CALIDA FOURSOMES NOT PAIRS
We have decided to make the Festival's Costa Calida Pairs competition on the Sunday (February 15) a straightforward foursomes, i.e. alternate shot with couples playing off half their combined handicaps.
It was felt that the original idea of the first nine being greensomes and the second nine better-ball would lead to confusion and spoil the fun aspect of the day.

Entry deadline extended to January 22 for Hacienda del Alamo Highlight

Cara Gruber putting during last year's Scottish women's amateur championship at Lossiemouth (Cal Carson Golf Agency image).

Royal Dornoch's Cara Gruber becomes

first Scot to enter Spanish Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Festival Organiser
Royal Dornoch member Cara Gruber has become the first Scot to file an entry for the 2nd Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival.
Cara, a member of the Northern Counties team for a number of years, plays off one of a handicap these days.
She will arrive early to warm up on the excellent practice facilities at the five-star resort, which include a six-hole Academy course.
Fellow Scot Billy Sim has reduced the daily fee for unlimited use of all the practice facilities - hit as many balls as you like - to only 10 Euros, especially for competitors at the Festival.
Buggies, incidentally, can be used in the tournaments by adult drivers and will available at 25 Euros per buggy.
Caddies will be permitted in all the Festival events except those exclusively for Under-16 girls who must walk and carry or pull their own clubs in their two 36-hole competitions. Under-16 girls competing in the pro-am and the Sunday pairs will not have these restrictions although they will still not be able to drive a buggy because of the insurance factor.
Cara Gruber will play in the Murcia Ladies Open over 36 holes on Thursday and Friday, February 12 and 13.
Then she and fellow Northerner, Campbell Thompson (Strathpeffer Spa) will form two-thirds of one of the amateur teams of three in the St Valentine's Day pro-am on the Saturday.
I have extended the deadline for entries by a week to January 22 to give the lady pros who have been competing at La Manga a chance to join the Festival fields. But it is looking more and more as if the Saturday pro-am will have to be converted to an event for teams of three amateurs, male or female. We simply don't have enough lady pro entries to partner 15 or 20 teams. More's the pity!
Cara and Campbell will also team up in the Costa Calida Pairs on the Sunday.
Perhaps their decision to enter the Hacienda del Alamo February Festival will spark off a late rush of other entries from Scotland. There's no harm in hoping!
Another entry today was that of 13-year-old Poppy Finlay, a 16-handicap junior member of the Vicars Cross club near Chester.
Continental or cooked breakfasts will be available in the Hacienda del Alamo clubhouse from 8am every morning. All the usual refreshments + snacks, lunches and dinners will also be available in the five-star clubhouse and its restaurant.
The Festival is sponsored by Glenmuir, Stewart Spence (owner of The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa, Aberdeen), Hacienda Golf Properties, an oil firm who prefer to remain anonymous and, of course, Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort.

Runner-up in Arizona, now Amelia (13) takes aim
on Hacienda del Alamo February Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON (Festival Organiser)
If the low professional entry has been disappointing, then the number of girls entering the Under-16 events has been uplifting as the Hacienda del Alamo February Festival entry deadline approaches.
January 15 was the official last day for entries but we've stretched that by a week to give the professionals/would-be professionals competing this week at the Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying School at La Manga a chance to finalise their playing plans once their focus shifts from the tournament that is deciding their immediate future.
Personally, I think the chance to use arguably the best practice facilities in Spain and indulge in some low-key competition for cash prizes (hopefully a minimum of 1,000 Euros an event), all at the same Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort venue, is a heaven-sent opportunity, particularly for rookie pros looking to cut their competitive teeth in 2009.
Up to now, it does not look as if my opinion has been shared by the lady pros, which is a pity as their non-appearance could result in future Festivals being open only to amateurs.
Amelia Taylor, pictured above, from Bury is one of the youngsters who will be showing their paces at the Festival. Only 13 and a member at the famous St Annes Old Links, Amelia has gained a lot of competition experience already despite her tender years.
In December she went all the way to Arizona to compete in the US Kids Desert Shoot-out at Phoenix and finished second in the Girls Aged 13 category. During the summer, she had the lowest net score at the Scottish Under-14 girls' championship at The Glen, North Berwick.
Amelia reduced her handicap from 36 in September 2006 to 12.6 last July.
The Lancashire youngster arrives in Spain too late for the Murcar Under-16 girls open over 36 holes on Thursday and Friday, February 12-13 but she will make up for lost time by taking part in the St Valentine's Day pro-am on the Saturday, the Costa Calida Pairs with her 18-handicap dad Trevor on Sunday and then the Hacienda del Alamo Under-16 girls' open over two rounds on Monday and Tuesday, February 16-17.

Ellis Keenan (Sunningale), latest entrant to the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Festival next month (Image by Cal Carson Golf Agency).

Sunningdale ace Ellis Keenan is going to be a

busy girl at the Hacienda del Alamo Festival

Ellis Keenan, the Sunningdale scratch player who had an outstanding season in 2008, is among the latest entries to the Hacienda del Alamo February Festival which has a programme of six events, of which four are open to lady professionals and amateurs. The other two are two-round events for Under-16 girls.
Eighteen-year-old Ellis cut her handicap from four to scratch and won the Hapshire Rose (with a six-under-par 67 in the second round, the South-east Ladies Championship, the Surrey girls' championship, and the Bridget Jackson Bowl by six strokes.
She has been chosen for the English Women's Golf Association Select South-east Squad and has accepted a golf scholarship offer from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Ellis will go there in August. Her brother Farren spent four years at the University of Texas and is now an England squad member.
Ellis is going to be a busy lady at the Festival. She has entered the Murcia Ladies Open over 36 holes (February 12-13), the St Valentine's Day pro-am on the Saturday (February 14), the Costa Calida Pairs in partnership with Charlotte Dalton (Ladbrook Park) on the Sunday (February 15) and finally the closing 36-holer Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open (February 16 and 17).
Everyone who enters at least one Festival event is entitled to a free practice round and Ellis will play hers on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 11.

La Manga-based former Ladies European Tour professional Ruth O'Carroll has sportingly agreed to make a competitive comeback at next month's Hacienda del Alamo Festival.
"I've not played on the LET for five years and I've got three children now but I'll give it a go in the Murcia Ladies Open (February 12 and 13), " said Ruth.
"I would need to find a babysitter to be able to play in the other Festival events!"
Ruth was an England international and Hertfordshire county team player before she turned professional.
Well done, Ruth for entering into the spirt of the Festival.
We are very, very short of lady professionals. We need at least 20 for the St Valentine's Day pro-am on the Saturday. So if you are a lady pro and you are reading this, please follow Ruth O'Carroll's example and "give it a go!"
Another former Ladies European Tour professional and Scotland amateur international Tracey Craik also now lives at La Manga - but she has not entered yet. Tracey is an old friend of mine .. and I'm working on it!
Just a reminder that we have reduced the entry fee for Under-16s to 25 Euros for all the events, not just the two 36-hole girls' stroke-play events. We want to encourage parents to enter their youngsters to gain competitive experience.
And a second reminder, no caddies are permitted in the Under-16 girls' events. For the remainder of the competitors buggies are allowed in all events - rented on the basis of two players to a buggy. Battery-driven and "normal" pull trolleys will be available for renting from the Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort.

SPAIN HERE WE COME ...

HAYLEY DAVIS and (above right) HANNAH TURLAND

Bright young stars Hayley and

Hannah enter HdA Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Festival Organiser
Two of the brightest young prospects on the English girls' golf scene, Hayley Davis (Ferndown) and Hannah Turland (Tidworth), are the latest to submit entries for the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival at the five-star resort in the Murcia region of south-east Spain next month.
Hayley, who is 15 and has an exact handicap of 1.2, finished fourth in last year year's English Under-15 girls' championship at Ramside and was beaten finalist (at the 19th) in the Dorset women's county championship.
Hannah Turland, a 14-year-old who plays off two, was the English Under-13 girls' champion in 2007. She finished seventh in the English Under-15 girls' championship last year when she was also a competitor in the prestigious R&A Junior Open at Hesketh.
They have both entered the two Under-16 girls' 36-hole stroke-play events at the Hacienda del Alamo Festival and will team up for the Costa Calida Pairs on the Sunday.
By the way, Lyndsey Hewison, English Women's Golf Association Press Officer, tells me that another youngster who is bound for the Festival, 13-year-old Amber Ratcliffe, shot two-under par gross in the January stableford at Royal Cromer (in freezing temperatures and strong winds).
"It's her first sub-par score in competition and although it was a non-qualifier she's hoping to get cut," reports Lyndsey. "Meanwhile, Amber scored 45 pts off seven of a handicap!! She tells me she's really looking forward to the Festival and she's very impressed that Holly Clyburn will be there."
CHEAPER FOR UNDER-16s IN ALL FESTIVAL EVENTS
Because everybody is beginning to feel the economic pinch, we have decided that the entry fee for Under-16 year olds in ALL the Festival events, not just their own stroke-play tournaments, will be pegged at 25 Euros for each competition.

Girl internationals Charlie
Douglass & Anna Carling
enter HdA Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Festival Organiser
Two girls who have played for their native countries at girls' international level are among the latest entries for next month's Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Golf Festival.
Charlie Douglass, a member at Brocket Hall Golf Club, comes from Stevenage, Hertsfordshire and is 19 years old. A left-hander, she has a handicap of +0.3 and was an England Under-18 girl cap.
Charlie almost won the 2006 English girls' championship. She lost in the final at Kings Norton to Rachel Jennings who birdied the last two holes to beat Douglass by one hole.
Charlie has been a member of past English Women's Golf Association training squads. She has entered the 36-hole Murcia Ladies Open (February 12-13), the St Valentine's Day pro-am on the Saturday when she and one-handicap male amateur Anthony Hughes will be in the same amateur team.
Douglass plans to skip the Costa Calida Pairs on the Sunday - unless we can get her to change her mind! - and then come back into the fray in the closing 36-hole Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open on Monday & Tuesday, February 16-17.
Anna Carling, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, is a member at Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club and lives at Cardiff Bay. She is also 19 years old with a handicap of 3.3. Anna, beaten at the 22nd hole of the 2007 Welsh girls championship final by Beth Davies at Southerndown, has played for Wales in the girls' home internationals and the European girls' team championships.
At the inaugural Hacienda del Alamo Women's Festival, Carling came second to Welsh compatriot Rhian Wyn Thomas in the amateur section of the Murcia Ladies Open over 36 holes.
That's the only event Anna has entered at next month's Festival.
